Friday Hoofers Fall 2009 Schedule

October 2 F31M Birdstand From Sunburst

Starting at Sunburst on NC215 we don our wading sandals to cross the West Fork of the Pigeon River and then head up the Fork Mountain Trail to the ridgeline. To the left we visit the site of the old Hightop fire tower. We then turn back and proceed to an outcrop near Birdstand for lunch and then return to our cars, crossing the West Fork again. (No, we never actually get to Birdstand!)
October 9 F73A Mt. LeConte

Early Start: 6:00AM
From Newfound Gap we hike the AT to the Boulevard trail. Then the Boulevard trail to Mt. LeConte and down the Alum Cave Trail to our shuttle.
October 14 Oktoberfest (Wednesday)
Our annual Autumn picnic at Holmes State Forest for members and their guests. Sign up by Friday Oct 9 at hike assembly areas. The menu will be brats and fixins. Please bring a side dish or dessert to share and your own drinks. Utensils will be provided; fee $1.00. Picnic meeting time is 11:15AM.

We’ll head over to Shining Rock from Big Sam Parking via the Art Loeb and/or Ivestor Gap trails.
October 23 F21A Cedar Rock The New Way
8mi., 1800’, R9, $2.00
Starting from Kagle Mountain Road on Cathey’s Creek Road we hike up Rock Creek to Butter Gap. From there we’ll climb up Cedar Rock then down to Kagle Mountain Gap up Kagle Mountain and back to the trailhead. Don’t miss this hike! Don’t forget the Rope!
October 30 Panthertown Valley Loop
13 mi, R10, 2800’ cl, $4.00
Early Start: 8:00AM
From the Cold Mountain Gap parking lot we hike to Schoolhouse Falls , Little Green Mountain, Big Green Mountain, Salt Rock, and Blackrock Mountain. A shorter loop will be available for hikers in a second car by who will skip Black Rock Mountain and hike along the valley floor back to their cars.
November 6 F38C Mt. Pisgah and Frying Pan

There are actually some Pisgah Hikers who have never been to the top of Mt. Pisgah. To remedy this we will do both Mt. Pisgah and Frying Pan Tower in a big loop hike.
November 13 F63M Table Rock (SC)
8mi. 2500’cl, R10, $5.50
This is our annual trek up Table Rock and back. One group will take a side loop and hike toward Pinnacle Mountain for a 10 mile hike.
November 20 F19A Cold Mountain

From the Daniel Boone Scout Camp to the top and return. An extra snack might be a good idea for the rest break under the apple tree at Deep Gap on the way up.
November 27 Leader’s Choice
December 4 F62A Rim of the Gap (SC)
12mi, e1200’, R10, $2.50
Early Start: 8:00AM
From the US-276 parking we take the Rim of the Gap Trail (a real toughie) to Jones Gap State Park where we have a late lunch. Then we climb 6 miles up the east side of the river back to US276 and the shuttle. This is a long slow hike and it is suggested that a trail snack be carried in addition to lunch.
December 11 F13A Case Camp/Seniard Ridge
10mi, 1500’cl , R10, $2.50
From the Case Camp trailhead on 475B we hike up to the BRP and bushwhack up to the MTS. We continue on the MTS and on to the unmarked trail to the BRP. We cross the BRP and hike the Pisgah Ridge to Graveyard Fields and back to the Seniard Ridge trailhead on the BRP where we hike back to our cars.
December 18 F51A Slate Rock-Pilot Rock
9mi, 1300’, R9, $3.50
We start and end the hike on the Pilot Cove Trail and enjoy the views from Pilot Rock and Slate Rock. No, we won’t have to hike on Yellow Gap trail!
